Backmasking

Posted by Ben Harris

Since I have some time on my hands, Im going to write a little article about backmasking. Backmasking is basically when a song contains a hidden message which can be heard when played in reverse. There are many well known songs that contain these hidden messages. The most impressive from my point of view is Stairway to heaven by Led Zeppelin.

When played forward, you will hear the following: ”If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow, don’t be alone now, it’s just a spring clean for the May queen. Yes there are two paths you can go back, but in the long run there’s still time to change the road you’re on.

However when played backwards, you will hear the message: “Here’s to my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is satan. He’ll give you 666, there was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan.

Ok, here come the skeptics. So I have personally reversed this section of the song. The forward verse starts at about 4.20 in the song.

After some research on this, its also interesting to not that one of the artists (Jimmy Page) bought Aleister Crowley’s house in Scotland which had become a well known Satanic church and was known amongst them as ‘The Toolhouse’. Crowley had advocated in his books that his followers should learn to read and speak backwards.
